WALTER REED Exceedingly rare signature of Walter Reed on an envelope. Exceedingly Rare signature: "Soldier's letter/Walter Reed,/Major Surgeon, U.S.A." in upper left corner of envelope, 6¼x3½. Imprinted postage stamp in upper right, postmarked Marianao, Cuba, June 29 8AM 1900. Addressed by Reed to: "Miss Blossom Reed,/Blue Ridge Summit,/Franklin County,/Pa." Accompanied by an unsigned pamphlet: "Experimental Yellow Fever" by Walter Reed, M.D., Surgeon, U.S.A., James Carroll, M.D., Contract Surgeon, U.S.A. and A. Agramonte, M.D., Contract Surgeon, U.S.A., reprinted from "American Medicine" Vol. II, No. 1, Pages 15-23, July 6, 1901, 28p, 6x9. Lightly soiled. Fine condition. With another unsigned pamphlet: "The Etiology of Yellow Fever" by the same authors, reprinted from the "Journal American Medical Association", February 16, 1901, 28p, 6x9. "Compliments of the writers" in ink (unknown hand) above title. Chipped at bottom left blank corner. Separated at 3 places at mid-vertical fold of cover. Overall, fine condition. WALTER REED (1851-1902) addressed this envelope to his 16-year-old daughter, BLOSSOM REED (1883-1904). Reed, appointed chairman of a commission sent to study yellow fever among U.S. soldiers in Cuba in 1898, proved that the disease was transmitted by mosquitoes. In 1901-1902, he was Professor of Pathology-Bacteriology at Columbia University in Washington, D.C. He died in 1902, at age 51, from a sudden case of appendicitis. The Army Medical Center in Washington is named for him. Walter Reed, his wife Emily (1856-1950) and their daughter Blossom are buried together in Arlington National Cemetery. His tombstone bears the quote: "He gave to man control over that dreadful scourge Yellow Fever". Framed in the Gallery of History style: 38½x21½.
